Renown. How does it work?
Can anyone tell me why the Sons of Bellerophon appear to have very high renown? They weren't even at the last event, were they?

Re: Renown. How does it work?
I thought that but forgot they had a philospher and a priest there. just no warleader or hoplites.
so i've absolutely no idea how renown works. i'd figured it was on victories in the arena but also that you had to be the one who took the city - (we aided all fights and won all but one but our group came out with very low renown). i also sacrificed a fair old bit to poseidon but not sure that counts for anything either - maybe we should send a preist to ask the gods what would give us most renown????

Re: Renown. How does it work?
Well, I gave over a shedload of cash (well over 100 drachma) and a lot of quintessence to be used as sacrifice to the Gods. Plus we were part of 3 good wins in the arena, including taking a city, which is now ours, and in the loss, the Dodona battle, I challenged the remaining Persians to single combat when I was the last Greek standing. Minos said I had won Renown for that deed. Apparently none of these facts actually contribute to Renown standings........

Aha! Suddenly the Sons of Bellerophon have been shifted down the renown listings.......
Would be nice to understand WHAT affects Renown though....

Re: Renown. How does it work?
i'm totally baffled by it. i can listr a few actions we've all taken but whether they get taken into accont, i've no idea. i can;t see how the SoB priest and philospher did so much that they left the actions of every other groups, P and P's (not to even count fighters) behind??

Re: Renown. How does it work?
All I know for certain is that victories do not necessarily do anything to boost renown; the example originally cited was Thermopylae (turns out that's a really awkward name to type).
I think you gain more renown for entering the arena when outnumbered.

but the Delphi and CofI went in on their own into battles totally outnumbered and they are lower than us???
i tell you it's not for mortals to know! nor is it for them to spell Thermop.... damn

...and when I last looked the Temple of Aphrodite were right at the bottom, despite going up against 20 on his own.
I thought SoB were both philosophers - Lyria and Nikstratos?

Re: Renown. How does it work?
I asked PD for a clarification. They have answered as follows;
Hi James, Renown is a function of group size, story interactions and the observations of Minos on actions in the arena. We have no plans to publish a formula as it is a mix of numbers (mechanics) and the subjective views of NPCs. I appreciate this makes 'playing the renown game' tougher, but I'm afraid not everything can be reduced to a simple input/output model. In many ways it's similar to the priests, where their standing with the gods is a mix of mechanical sacrifice and the interactions/outcomes they produce. As you identify 'heroic defeats' is one possible route, and you certainly won some renown for your group as Minos commented; but others won stuff too and it's relative positioning. The gods are entertained by a show - which isn't just about losing well against ridiculous odds, but can also be about cunning; about excellent tactics; about taking risks and acting heroically. Winning or losing in a close, well fought fight will often give both sides renown; whilst winning when you have overwhelming odds will give material gains rather than divine favour.
Guess I shall have to get the rest of the CoP to work a bit harder......

Re: Renown. How does it work?
your lot a load of lazy buggars too
Dave and Bob excluded from that for their tireless shield/weapon production - they're allowed a sit down at the event
joking aside, guess it requires a bit more "role-play" on our parts and not just military action

F*ck that. I'll just stick with being a cowardy custard and live with low renown.

Re: Renown. How does it work?
Just to allay confusion, The Sons of Bellerophon were two Philosphers at the last event, Nikostratos and Lyria.
We had the green canopy with the healers symbol outside and the fire pit in the middle.
Group names are often taken when mysteries are performed.
Previously they were quite a big war-band and took Cumae, Hopefully the war-band will return soon.

Can you confirm the warband will be at the next event? I really hope so.

SoB will have a fighting force in a couple of weeks afaik. See Phaidra's Facebook thread in the Parthenon

Re: Renown. How does it work?
The Sons of Bellerophon will have at least a Warleader and Helot in addition to the two of us at the next event. I'm not sure i'd describe that as the warband returning.
Things are getting there, we're hoping more will return next year, and we are trying to recruit as well.

Shame if some of the original SoB champions don't return. They were good lads - and had some pretty expensive kit!
